consideration» to what extent the high unemployment rates
in developing countries will call for more man power
intensive procedures» and lastly» are we equipped to cope
with these photogramraetric educational requirements?
The slow rate of availability of expensive photogrammetrie
instruments with chronic shortage of foreign exchange poses
the most serious constraint in a developing country*
In his General Report to the Twelfth ISP Congress»
Ottawa» 1972 Dr* Brandenberger came to the following
conclusion: "Based on the present progress rate of
photogramraetric activity» this would lead to the following
preliminary projections for the next five years: required
annual intake for professional photogrammetrists or with
university degree - 750; photogrammetric technicians -
2,700; and auxiliaries or plotter operators - 4,500**
Comparing the reported world land area and India f s land
area, Indian requirement of photogrammetric personnel
per year will be 6:20:35 i*e*, a total of 61*
If we consider the foreign exchange constraints
aspect and assume that we can buy only sixteen imported
photogrammetric instruments in a year, the requirement
of photogrammetric personnel at different levels will be
2:8:32* If we consider the additional requirement of
photogrammetric' teachers and for rotation of photogrammetrists
for other surveying and mapping tasks as is Inevitable
in all national survey organisations, the annual intake
in India for photogrammetric education at different
levels will be 8:12:48 l*e*, a total of 68 which is
somewhat nearer to the world-wide coverage* In India we
have two institutions teaching photogrammetry viz*,
Survey Training Institute, Survey of India, Hyderabad and
University of Roorkee, Roorkee* The total capacity available
for photogrammetric education at different levels in India
is 20:12:48 i*e*, a total of 80 which adequately caters for
the annual photogrammetric manpower requirement of India*
It is felt that the other developing countries may
follow any one of the above two models which is more suited
to that country's present situation in photogrammetry*
