always be indicated in the report which is a necessary attribute to any soil
map. The working group stresses the need to check, wherever possible, the
correlation between physiography and soils. It urgently invites all members
to contribute, by teamwork with all the experts concerned, to both the theoret
ical and the practical aspects related to the use of aerial photographs in soil
surveys.
Working Groups 3 and 9
Working Group 3 (Soils) and Working Group 9 (Engineering) of Commission
VII of the International Society for Photogrammetry, meeting at Delft, 31
August to 6 September, 1962, agree that there is a fundamental difference in
their definition of the word “soil”, that of Working Group 3 being associated
with Soil Genesis, Plant Growth and Agricultural Production (U.S. Soil
Survey Manual, 1951, page 8) and that of Working Group 9 being associated
with the consolidated and unconsolidated materials to be used in engineering
construction. Both Working Groups agree, however, that although it is clear
that these basic definitions are completely different, much may be gained from
a continuous exchange of ideas. They jointly invite the International Society for
Photogrammetry to draw the attention of all members to the advisability of
clearly indicating the definition of “soil” used in all publications related to
these subjects.
Working Group 4
1. Recognizing that problems of vegetation managements are different in
temperate, arid and inter-tropical regions, Working Group 4 recommends
that research in aerial photography and photo interpretation for vegetation
surveys be encouraged in each region, and believes that closer cooperation
between research stations and research workers of all nations is essential
to the rational development of vegetative resources, particularly in the
developing countries.
2. In view of the great demand for information about the vegetation resources
of developing countries, it is recommended that increased attention be
paid to the training of staff, at all levels, in the use of aerial survey techniques
for this work.
The training should include practical courses in the use of aerial photo
graphs, held at appropriate centres throughout the world, and run by both
international and bi lateral agencies.
Working Group 5
1. The chairman of Working Group 5 will appoint one corresponding member
in each member country to form an Advisory Committee for this Working
Group.
